Want to be more productive? Then start commanding your calendar.
The new year is almost here. If you are not commanding your calendar you may want to consider this practice for greater productivity. What exactly am I talking about?
Well have you heard Dave Ramsey talk about telling your money where to go by setting up a budget? Commanding your calendar does a very similar thing. However, with this you tell your time where to go!
You may ask what’s in it for you? Well how about greater productivity, more peace and the ability to prioritize what’s important to you. It’s really easy to get started.
How to get started
First, decide what is important to you and what times you want to block off for things like family, reflection, etc. Then you need to schedule in all of the things you must do like work, studying or whatever else is relevant.
Blocking like things together can help tremendously. For example, if you have appointments then you do them all on the same day. Doing like things together can maximize your effectiveness and increase your productivity exponentially.
One example, is I have my day to write and reflect on Mondays. This allows me to do similar task related items together that require being still and thinking. That way I am not distracted by having to do different tasks or appointments on these days.
On Tuesday and Wednesday I see coaching clients and so that allows me to be efficient and schedule several people into time slots in a two-day period. Thursdays are our group training days and Friday is my day left to whatever needs to be caught up or for last minute clients or to prepare for upcoming trainings.
Of course, your schedule will be completely unique to your needs. What like things can you put together? What things can you schedule out and plan for?
Tips and benefits for commanding your calendar
I always remind our clients to schedule workouts and time for reflection just like you would any other appointment. Then when someone asks if you are available you can simply say you have an appointment. This helps a lot of people to do their priorities and not feel guilty about it.
The plus is when you have scheduled in time for you and commanding your calendar you will be more refreshed, more productive and happier, which in turn means you will have more to give others from the overflow of what is going well in your life.
Questions for you
So, how is your calendar shaping up? Do you already do some of these things or could your benefit from planning a little better and not just flying by the seat of your pants?
To plan well you will want to find a great day planner that you like. After you have selected this you can go through the steps we mentioned above or create your own system of what works for you. There are no rules or right or wrong!
Some people schedule everything on their phones, while others (like me) do it the old-fashioned way by a day planner. It doesn’t matter what you use but rather just that you use it.
We have a sample pdf to share so you can see how some plan and plot their days. In this version you will see how to block off time or color code your days. Then you fill in your scheduled appointments with times, name etc.
You can download this basic outline example by clicking Metamorphosis Command Your Calendar. Then you can create your own version on your favorite planner based on your needs.
Commanding your calendar is just another way to help you be more productive and able to prioritize those things that are really important to you. If you don’t schedule your time, your priorities and your calendar life will just happen to you and time will pass while others fill your schedule.
I think this quote by Jim Rohn sums it up best, “If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you will fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they may have planned for you? Not much.”
