‘Tis the Season!
Tis the season to be jolly but are you feeling anything but? If you’re feeling overwhelmed, overworked and like the only way to check things off your long list is to work overtime, then these “5 Tips to De-Stress” may be a present worth giving yourself.
Tip #1: Breathe.
It sounds so simple but most of us rarely do it — at least not deeply. So right now wherever you are stop and focus on breathing. Inhale for a count of five. Then slowly exhale to a count of ten. Really focus on breathing deep down into your belly when you exhale and expanding your lungs when you inhale. Repeat 3 times.
Children breathe naturally from their belly but as we grow up and succumb to the pressures, stress and tension of modern life we forget about it. Most of us shallow breathe through our chest. So next time you are stressed. Stop. Close your eyes and simply breathe.
Tip #2: Manage Your Mindset.
We get what we focus on. Are you focusing on everything you aren’t doing or all of the negative? Try shifting your perspective and start to focus on the positive and the good in every situation. If you are down on yourself or playing negative tapes in your mind then let go of those lies and start repeating the truth about who you are until you believe it.
Tip #3: Just Do One Thing.
Your list may be a mile long and you may feel you will never get everything done but start with a list of your top priorities and just do one thing on that list. Tell yourself you just need to get this one most important thing done. After you do this then you can move on to the next. Before you know it you will have tackled a large part of your big list. It all starts by doing just one thing.
Tip #4: Plan & Prioritize Time for YOU!
Do you have the Christmas dinner planned out Martha Stewart style? Are the stockings hung by the chimney with care and the house decorated to the nines? What about planning and prioritizing some down time to rest and refresh? Think you can’t afford to take a few minutes for you? Think about this — if you will prioritize an hour or two here and there to what refreshes and revives you then you will have more to give others. What is it you love to do? Hike, read, reflect, workout, get a massage or facial? Well plan it out and take time for you.
Tip #5: Focus on Gratitude.
There is something that happens when we focus on gratitude. We become less stressed and more joyful. Studies show that it makes us healthier and helps us to sleep too. So today if you are feeling stressed start listing off all of things you are grateful for. You will be surprised how fast the stress will start melting away. When we speak good things and focus on gratitude and joy then it’s hard to stay in a state of stress or unrest.
This holiday season it might all hit the fan and nothing may go as planned but you don’t have to get stressed or fret about it. Stop and start to breathe from your belly, manage your mindset, just do one thing, plan and prioritize some time for you and focus on gratitude.
